East State and Fifth Streets and Sts. Constantine & Helen Greek Orthodox Church. Here is a bit of our history.
Rockford. In 1918 these families incorporated their dreams and established the Church. Sts. Constantine and Helen were chosen as the patron saints and thus the name of their church. The members purchased the building at 108 Nth Fifth in 1920. In 1970 the building was demolished and the current building was built in its place. Although this community has its roots in Greece, the current parishioners are multi cultural. Greeks, Lebanese, Serbians, Russians, and many others from diverse ethnic backgrounds have joined the parish. Decades ago, many Greek immigrants came to this country in search of “the American Dream”, bringing with them a wealth of ethnic traditions and customs. At the center of this culture is their Orthodox faith, where food and the most ancient expression of Christianity are beautifully intertwined. To eat good food with family and friends is an especially rewording part of ethnic identity. The city of Rockford and the surrounding communities of Northern Illinois and Southern Wisconsin have supported the church throughout the years. Now the parish wishes to repay this support of the community by allocating a portion of the net proceeds of the Greek Fest to the Rock River Valley Pantry. Last year we were able to give $3,500 to the pantry. With your help we hope to donate even more. |
